Lake Whakamarino Lodge on the shores of Lake Whakamarino at Tuai

Situated in Tuai on the picturesque shores of Lake Whakamarino, we offer the only lodge-style accommodation close to Lake Waikaremoana and Te Urewera National Park. Facilities include comfortable rooms with shared bathroom facilities, self-contained units, licensed restaurant (bookings essential), conference room, and tennis courts. Early bookings are essential for the peak summer season between October and March.

Lake Whakamarino means "tranquillity" in the local Maori language and it is one of four smaller lakes near the larger Lake Waikaremoana in the Te Urewera National Park. Remote, rugged, immense, Te Urewera contains the largest forested wilderness remaining in the North Island. From here you are only a couple of hours by road to the very edge of the Earth...the spectacular East Coast of New Zealand where the sun first rises every morning!

For trampers and hikers, the Lodge is the perfect base from which to set out on a variety of walks and tracks including the famous Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk. This is a 46 kilometre, three to four day tramping track that follows the lakeshore for most of its length. Magnificent forested scenery and plenty of opportunity for swimming and fishing are features of this world-renowned walking track.

Lake Whakamarino Lodge is situated right on the edge of a wilderness fishing paradise!
