Waiau River Valley in Te Urewera National Park

Ahurei Adventures offers a range of unique wilderness experiences in the remote and beautiful Waiau River Valley of Te Urewera. With its magnificent rainforest and rich birdlife the Waiau is a very special place.

Our experienced, local Māori guides have been hosting visitors here for many years, and have an intimate knowledge of the region including the fascinating history and local stories of life in this remote part of
New Zealand.

We provide a complete coordination service including guiding, meals, accommodation, 4WD transport, pack horses and vehicle security.

Our activities include:

Guided hunting at White's Clearing in the heart of Te Urewera, from October to April. The roar (rut) is usually around late March/April.

Horse treks for beginner to experienced riders in small groups at a leisurely pace. Our treks are usually from 2 hours to 2 days with longer treks on request.

Guided tramping from 1-5 days in the Waiau River Valley. The formed tracks cover fairly rugged terrain, are of moderate difficulty, and include river crossings.

Fishing for rainbow trout in the crystal clear pools and white water rapids of the Waiau River. Most fish are catch and release but this is optional.
